| Name: | (AU) Vergil Sparda |
|---|

Character: Vergil Sparda
Series/Fandom: Devil May Cry, basic appearance pulled from Devil May Cry 3, but the other games/books are used as well.
Original or Alternate: Alternate
Age: Early-mid 20s
Gender: Male
Species: Half human, half demon
Sexuality:
Appearance: Vergil is a blue-eyed, silver-haired devil with a somewhat pale complexion, especially if compared to his brother’s. His hair is typically spiked back neatly so that it stays out of his eyes, save for a strand or two that escapes the confines of the styling gel. When wet however, it has been proven that, if left alone, Vergil’s hair reaches to his collar in an almost mop-like style that is no different than that sported by his twin.
His clothing style of choice is classically stylish, if perhaps a bit outdated. Wearing a coat which, we surmise, is comprised primarily of azure silk, as well as a ribbed vest, leather pants, brown, leather, knee-high boots, his katana at his side, and a silken cravat to top it all off his usual garb, the elder of the Sparda twins usually makes for a striking figure.
Though he went through a period where he was “Nelo Angelo”, Vergil has once again donned his more familiar garb, ditching the armor that he wore as the dark angel.
He has collected various scars on his body from these trials, but none of these can be seen when fully clothed.
Personality: Vergil is the cold, calm one of the Sparda twins, being a perfect opposite to his brother’s hot-headed, impulsive personality, Vergil is instead given to calculated action, and tends to look before he leaps. A plotter and a schemer, he can see the tactical advantages in a situation and then make his move.
Though he and Dante share the mindset that they don’t really care what others think of them, Vergil only behaves in such a manner because of the general contempt in which he holds the human race, and even his own blood, which he has sometimes considered tainted.
Vergil likes to be in control of the situation, being something of a power-monger, this lusting for power of any kind has often gotten him into more trouble than he bargained for, and oft set him at odds with Dante, the only other person that he has left that he truly seems to view at any point in time with any sort of tender emotion.
However, he does have his little oddities…being a fan of good wine, classic literature, and lavish furnishings in the most traditional of styles, Vergil is a man of class and sophistication, with a broad vocabulary and a certain disdain for uncouth speech, such as his brother oft employs.
Oft selfish, Vergil is a very anti-social person as well, disliking the company of most others that Dante seems to thrive on, and in fact, Vergil would be pleased as punch if Dante was the only one that he ever spent time with.
There is also a deep self-loathing streak, one created by the events that have taken place in the not so recent past. Perhaps Vergil is truly repentant for his misdeeds…then again, perhaps not.
Abilities/Strengths: Vergil, being the half-blood son of a powerful devil, has enhanced reflexes, speed, strength, and super-human healing abilities, amongst other things, and is able to recover from wounds and damage that would kill a human many times over. Vergil is also an accomplished swordmaster, though he disdains the use of any sort of firearms, he does have a ranged attack, summoned swords, which uses magical blades for different offensive effects.
His overall style is compatible with the mode used by Dante in Devil May Cry 3 known as “Trickster”, only Vergil’s is referred to as “Dark Slayer”, and is marked by its array of evasive maneuvers.
Vergil also possesses the ability to assume his demonic form, this power known as ‘Devil Trigger’, and Vergil, unlike his twin, has a very tight control over his abilities in this area, able to transform at will, or, if he so chooses, transform only a single part of his body, such as an arm, or his lower half.
Weapons: Yamato, an O-Katana (a katana slightly longer than the norm and usually created for people of some precedence) handed down to him by the twins’ father, and one of Vergil’s prized possessions. The hilt is bound in blue fabric, and the hilt itself is trimmed in gold, also accenting it is a pair of tassels, which have been termed ‘gay’ (mostly by Dante).
Weaknesses: Vergil doesn’t display his emotions for the most part…though he is possessed of a grand array of things which bother him, the elder twin tends to bottle it up inside, which is damaging to both himself, and ultimately to others, because he tends to explode when he reaches his breaking point, thus inspiring a burst of action that he might later regret.
Stubborn, both of the Sparda twins are stubborn. If convinced they are right, arguing with one of them, and especially Vergil, is like smacking one’s head into a wall: useless and probably painful.
Vergil’s power-lust tends to get the better of him at times, oft causing his downfall as he will pursue power at the expense of all else, including those he cares about.
Though Vergil is proud to claim his demonic heritage, he has huge familial issues, often is as quick to try and kill his brother as to love him, and both twins were deeply affected by the loss of their mother.
Though possessed of flowery language and a large vocabulary, Vergil often has a difficult time communicating with others, or attempts to do so and ends up offending he to whom the twin only wished to convey a point.
He has also allowed his past to deeply scar him, having been subjected to tortures innumerable at the hands of the overlord of hell, Mundus, and his minions. Vergil is not quite the man that he once was, inwardly despising himself and believing that he must compensate for the things he has done instead of truly atone for them. Any mention of this past by anyone other than Dante causes oft-violent…angry reactions.
History: (Minor pieces yanked from AU!Dante’s history with permission from Manda) Vergil and his identical twin, Dante…are the sons of the demon Sparda, a very powerful devil who led an uprising in Hell in order to shield the human world from invasion, and won. Then he retired quietly in the human world, having entangled the majority of his power into keeping the worlds separate, thus living as a mortal for the time that he had left. Taking a human wife named Eva, he sired the twins and thus created half-breeds…beings with very human emotions and a vast amount of demonic power.
Being the twin more closely aligned with his demonic blood, Vergil was the more reserved of the two, slow to display his emotions, and was his father’s favorite when he and his brother were twins. Vergil took a natural liking to books and languages, being taught Latin at the urging of his mother, the elder twin thrived on it. When the twins were thirteen, they were each given a sword on their birthday - Dante was given Rebellion while Vergil was given Yamato. They promptly went out and discovered that they could acquire massive damage and live…much to their mother’s dismay. Their father trained them in the use of the weapons, as well as offering them the chance to learn how to use any other type of weapon in his arsenal, and though Vergil did learn to adapt to different weaponry, he spurned the use of guns, whilst his brother took to marksmanship. Also bestowed on the brothers was a pair of linked amulets, each the half of one that Sparda had given to Eva on their wedding day, and which together comprised the key to the demon world, which Sparda had sealed off with his own power.
When the twins were about seventeen (and probably earlier), feelings that went deeper than just a brotherly bond were formed between the two, and though Vergil wanted his twin, he didn’t give any indication to his brother that he felt that way, and thus grew increasingly agitated as Dante’s wild behavior, including sleeping around and clubbing, only grew worse, especially as Vergil was the one who usually had to go out and drag his errant twin home.
One day however Dante locked them both in Vergil’s room and refused to leave until the matter was settled, and settled it was, the two beginning a relationship that would be tumultuous, but lasting in the years to come.
Very soon after this, things quite literally went to hell for the twins - Sparda had lived out his full span of years as a mortal and soon died - heavily mourned by the twins and Eva. This broke whatever protections Sparda had put on his family and allowed a group of demons to enter the human world and come after Eva and the teenage twins. At first, the twins tried to fight, but they were no match for the demons - especially the leaders of the group, named Amashen and Tiis. Eva urged the twins to run, to hide, even as she tried to hold off the demons using Sparda's guns, Luce and Ombra. This bought the twins time and Dante did run, though Vergil tried to stay and assist his mother.
Vergil was unsure as to what happened to his twin, whilst he himself was cut down by the demons and believed dead. However he awoke, his body having healed the damage, and found himself in a graveyard, where he was forced to take on yet another batch of lurking demons, taking up Yamato, he managed by some miracle to emerge victorious, and faded into the shadows, not wanting to draw attention to himself, but desiring revenge for his mother and possibly his brother, as he did not know of Dante’s fate.
This inspired him to create the persona known as Gilver, a bandaged mercenary of sorts (the bandages used to hide his very memorable features) in the somewhat shadier line of business, though he concentrated on the hunting of demons. Appearing once again in Dante’s life, he told himself he would be content to watch, to make sure that nothing happened to his twin, as Dante had taken on the identity known as “Tony Redgrave” and remembered nothing of his past.
One day “Tony” got into a situation that was a little more than he could handle, and Gilver ended up rescuing him and taking him home. Blindfolding his twin, the elder brother gave into his own urges, ended up having sex with the other, under no real protest from “Tony”, and in fact, the encounters continued, “Tony” seeming willing enough to remain blindfolded, a fact that kept Gilver’s real identity a secret. One night, Gilver came back injured and "Tony" ended up taking off the blindfold to try and help him. At this point, he realized Gilver was identical to him and ended up figuring out the other's real name ... and eventually regaining his own identity.
Not long after this, Vergil heard rumor of a disturbance in the Underworld, and not wanting to drag Dante into danger, the elder twin just disappeared one day to go investigate, fully intending to return, but instead ended up on a long sojourn through the lower realms…wanting to change the way that things worked in the demon world, Vergil began his quest for power, deciding that he would be the ultimate ruler of both worlds, the human one and the demonic one. He was of the exalted opinion that he could do things better.
Allying himself with the human Arkham, a dangerous but profitable alliance for them both, Vergil set out to retrieve the amulet from his twin, and break the seven seals of the Temen-ni-gru, the tower that marked the gate between realms.
Battling with his twin atop the tower, Vergil not only takes Dante’s amulet from him, but succeeds in awakening his twin’s demonic power, enabling him to Devil Trigger. During the subsequent series of battles, the tower itself changes, opening up the portal to hell.
At the end of this storyline, Vergil did succeed in opening the gates, though Arkham then attempted to go around both twins to get the power of Sparda for himself. The twins decided to work together "like old times" to defeat Arkham. After this, they fought each other for possession of their father's sword (Force Edge) and the two amulets. Dante actually won this fight, but was willing to forgive Vergil and give him another chance. However, Vergil chose to spurn Dante's help, believing that as this was their father’s home, he needed to be the one to bring change to it, and jumped off the edge of a cliff, falling into the demon world, going so far as to slash his brother’s palm open with Yamato, throwing back into his face the offer of help.
Challenging the current overlord of hell, Mundus, Vergil failed rather miserably against the dark lord’s power, and was instead enslaved…put through a series of tortures and humiliations until he broke under the strain, so far that he didn’t even remember who he was…made the plaything of Amashen and Tiis, the two demons who had killed their mother. When the two were through with him he was turned back over to Mundus, who remade him into “Nelo Angelo” the dark angel, teaching him that he was ‘nihil’…nothing…nothing but a tool.
Mundus, in his plans to kill the only remaining fragment of Sparda opposition, sent Nelo Angelo after Dante. He did not, however, count on the strength of the twins’ bond. Dante realized after their first encounter that Nelo Angelo was in fact Vergil, his elder brother, and though Vergil was surprised by the emotions that the demon hunter could call to the fore in him, he resisted remembering anything of his past or who he truly was.
Dante managed to get the upper hand, knocking Nelo Angelo’s helm from his head and slamming him back, following up the rough treatment with a warm kiss…that was enough to awaken the sealed memories in Vergil…and the two remained together for a time, and then set out to defeat Mundus, a task that frightened the elder twin, but that they both agreed needed to be done; but during the course of the battle, Mundus regained his control of Vergil and turned him against his twin. Dante was then forced to kill his twin in order to get to Mundus and defeat him as well - locking the emperor away again.
Vergil awoke to find himself in the lowest level of hell, at the mercy of Amashen and Tiis once more…after some long torment there, he managed to break free, making his way up into the upper levels of the Underworld, and maintaining a shadowy presence there, looking for the day when he could rejoin his twin in the human world.
However…one day, he is pulled through what he assumes to be a portal…only to find an entirely different sort of world on the other side…
